Community
Community is very important to me, and building and supporting research communities has been an important part of my professional life.
Women in Machine Learning
One of the things I am most proud of is co-founding the Women in Machine Learning (WiML) Workshop back in 2006, when I was a PhD student. I have stayed involved with WiML in various roles ever since. We started the workshop to create a space for women in machine learning to connect with one another and share their research. What we initially imagined might be a one-time event grew into a much larger community, and watching that community grow and evolve has been one of the highlights of my career.
20 years of WiML: In 2025, Hanna Wallach and I recorded an episode of the Microsoft Research Podcast reflecting on how WiML got started, how it evolved, our own paths through machine learning and responsible AI, and what we would tell our younger selves.
NeurIPS
I considered NeurIPS my “home community” back in grad school. Even as my research interests evolved over the years, I've stayed deeply involved in the NeurIPS community, including serving as Program Co-Chair, Workshops Chair, and Tutorials Chair (twice!). As Program Co-Chair in 2021, I worked with my co-chairs on an ambitious set of changes to the review process. We moved the full review workflow to OpenReview, strengthened and formalized the ethics review process, and introduced the NeurIPS paper checklist to encourage better research practices around reproducibility, transparency, limitations, research ethics, and societal impact.
FAccT
I’ve also been deeply involved in the FAccT community, including serving on the original Steering Committee, as Program Co-Chair in 2025, and currently as part of the Executive Committee. As Program Co-Chair, I worked with my co-chairs to reinforce FAccT’s interdisciplinary “big tent” vision while making the review process more standardized, transparent, and accessible. We developed public guides for authors, reviewers, and area chairs, made review criteria and forms available in advance, and launched the FAccT blog as a new way to communicate with the community about how the conference works.
Other Research Community Leadership
I’ve taken on a number of other leadership and service roles across the research communities I’ve been part of, including serving as General and Program Co-Chair of HCOMP 2019 and as Secretary-Treasurer of the ACM Special Interest Group on Economics and Computation (SIGecom) from 2015–2019.
